Plateliai Lake

      

Diving centre Oktopusas is established near Plateliai yacht club and is always ready to grant these services: information about diving places, underwater guide help, renting and selling of equipment, air filling and PADI courses. In season there is a lifeguard. For arrivals we will advise where is better place to stay or where you can get traditional local people viands. We are ready to help you 24 hours in a day.

     

Plateliai lake is the biggest lake in Samogitia (Lithuanian west part). Territory of lake is 1210 hectare. Length 8.4km and width 3.3km. Max depth ~50m. Average depth ~10.4m. There are 7 islands: Briedsalė, Pliksalė, Gaidsalė and others. There are 17 tributary small rivers: Juodupis, Kunigupis and others. And there is only one excretory river – Babrungas. In the depth water temperature don’t reach 10°C even in summer.

Diving routes.

In the lake are 7 routes that we offer. Three of them are near castle island. And one by one near yacht club, “plok štinė“ resort, and near „Kryžiavonės“ hill and also drowned yacht near „Veršių“ island.

     
Yacht club. Depth isn‘t large, there grow lot‘s of flora and you can see lot‘s of whitebait. You can also find there pikes (luces or jackfishes), tenches (snappers), basses (perches) and rarely you can find grigs (eels). This place is very convenient for beginners or night divers.

     

„Plokštinė“. In this route you can descend till 15 metres depth. There lays sanked boat. Deeper you can find clay‘s hills with burbots (lings). And in inshore there are lot‘s of basses (perches) and pikes (luces or jackfishes).

     


Bridge. In 11 meters depth you can set eyes on XV century bridge remains. Around bridge remains swim lot’s of fishes such as basses (perches) and pikes (luces or jackfishes) and whitefishes.

     

The north castle island side. Coast scarp goes down athwart till 20metres and then it goes slowly deeper. Near scarp in caves frequently find burbots (lings) and crayfish (canker). In the deep water is always clear and never warms till 10°C. We recommend you to take illuminator.

     

Diving route starts at west coast of castle island. When you reach 8 metres depth you can set eyes on piles of sanked sticks that are overgrown by shells. You can also clap eyes on large groups of bass ( perch) and twirly pikes (luces or jackfishes). A bit further from island where you will be able to set eyes on collapsed helicopter place. You will be able to look at some small details that remind that horrible event. You can also find some drowned boats and trees. In autumn there are lots of bass ( perches). This route is till 15metres depth.

     


„Kryžiavonės“ hill rises from 30 metres depth till 2 metres depth. This is really difficult route because in deep places it is absolutely dark and the water don‘t warm more than till 5°C. There are some spectacular size burbot’s (ling’s) caves and sharp scarp. 2005-06-04 Brothers Pranci škonai together with diving centre Oktopusas build 4 metres heigh cross with Jesus torment sculpture in 16 meters depth. This route is one of the most interesting and difficult in whole lake.

                                   

Diving route „Yacht“ begins off the hill (deep is only 1.5 meters) which is about 200 meters from „veršių“ island. On the way down you can set eyes on groups of basses ( perches) and really large pikes (luces or jackfishes). The sight is very good and you see yacht from far away. It lies at 15 meters depth.
